On the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood in Kansas City Kansas, this morning, some of the protesters were demanding to know what holiday tomorrow was. It made them very upset when I told them my mother had been dead for 21 years so I don't really care what holiday tomorrow is 😂
I never had children of my own, and my mother was a lot of the reason for that. She wasn't a terrible person, she didn't beat me or abuse me, but she did show me what it's like to be parented with resentment by someone who was forced by circumstance to have more babies than she could comfortably care for or afford. That's a lot of the reason why I'm such a vociferous abortion rights activist. My mother would probably never have availed herself of abortion care; that was one of the many things we disagreed about. But she deserved more than to be overwhelmed by too many babies and not enough money, held captive by her anatomy and her husband's gonads. 😂
To those of you who really are mothers, I don't begrudge you your day. I just hope that you don't begrudge me not needing to share it with you, even symbolically. May mother universe bless us all.
I think it's nice to acknowledge women who wish they were mother's but haven't been able to become one (as you did). But other than that, anything else is dumb.
It’s the eve of my first Mother’s Day. My son will be 3 weeks old tomorrow. I have worried endlessly in the last three weeks about what will become of my career and everything I did Before. And I’m not even sure any of that matters because I am now somebody’s mother and it means more than anything else ever has.

Wooo boy, you’re in the trenches right now! My youngest is two and a half but it feels like yesterday I was in your position. It’s as hard a job and as great a sacrifice as anything I’ve ever done, mothering a newborn. It’s also such a precious time. Btw, I write this note from a beautiful estate in St Martin, where I just hosted a retreat. My business survived and so did I. So will you. Sending you so much love and kinship today. You are not alone.
This is also my first Mother’s Day (baby will be 3 months tomorrow!) and wooo boy does it hit in a special way! I had this baby well before many of my peers are even thinking about having kids and let me tell you I have been shocked to see things like Ross’ quote circulating. I wouldn’t have batted an eye at it a year ago…now it feels personal. Thank you for writing this.
With you on this one. Indoor plant moms, dog daddies, fur baby moms and puppy parents have become the forks scratching on my plate.
Unless their bodies birthed those things, they are not parents and kindly stop saying so. ~ a holey old mother
When young and dumb (30 and shoulda known better) I said to a couple with a baby, “We just adopted a kitten so I can kinda relate.”
